![]() ![]() Then your work history would appear as a simple list below your skills section, where you’d only include your job title, the name of your employer, the city where you worked, and your dates of employment. The difference is that the body of a functional resume highlights your most important skills-such as “administrative experience” or “customer service”-with three to five bullet points that show how you’ve applied those skills in various roles. Like any other resume, a functional layout features your name and contact information at the top and lists your technical skills, interests, and education toward the bottom (unless you’re a recent graduate-in that case it may be closer to the top). So instead of simply listing your recent jobs and corresponding duties in reverse chronological order (like you would on a more traditional chronological resume), you’d select only the most relevant responsibilities from each of your past roles and combine them to paint a broader picture of your skill set. Wouldn’t it be easier if you could just list all your skills out without having to worry about making your work history look cohesive? Like, say, on a functional resume?Ī functional resume, sometimes called a skills-based resume, places the focus on your skills and areas of expertise, rather than on the details of your work history. Especially if your work history isn’t an exact match for the job you want, if you don’t have recent work experience to speak of, or if you haven’t technically held a traditional job before. Creating a customized resume for every job you apply to is no easy task. The goal, of course, is to help a hiring manager understand how your unique set of skills lines up with their needs-and that you’re the ideal person for the job. ![]() When done right, your resume should showcase your most relevant experience as it relates to the role for which you’re applying.

Flinto is a browser-based animation tool you can trust. The UI has always felt slow and clunky to me, which may just be my perception, although when I read blog posts like this one from Bruce Dawson I feel a bit vindicated. Still, for me, I just don’t find Windows to my taste. (Keep in mind I was using WSL back in 2016-2018 though, and I’m told it’s improved since then.) npm install would take orders of magnitude more time on WSL compared to the equivalent Mac or Linux machine. For me, though, I don’t do much PC gaming, and my experience with WSL is that although compatibility was excellent, the performance was poor. This is definitely a viable option, and totally reasonable, especially if there’s that one Windows program you really need (or you’re a PC gamer). Since the command line is the main selling point of Linux (IMO), it’s tempting to just use Windows with the Windows Subsystem for Linux instead. I set my terminal to automatically open tmux on startup.Īh, the command line on Linux. As an added bonus, tmux also runs on Mac, so if you learn the keyboard shortcuts once, you can use them everywhere. I found the simplest solution was to use tmux instead. If you’re a Mac user, the hardest part about switching to the Linux terminal is probably just going to be the iTerm keyboard shortcuts you’ve memorized to open tabs and panes. incompatible versions of grep, tar, and sed with slightly different flags, so you have to brew install coreutils and use ggrep and gtar… ugh), then you know what I’m talking about. All my servers run Ubuntu, as do my Travis CI tests, as does my desktop. Using Linux as your desktop machine just makes things that much simpler. So eventually your code is going to have to run on Linux. Even if you’re not doing much sysadmin stuff, you’re probably using Linux to run your test and CI infrastructure. The main reason should be clear: if you’re writing code that’s going to run on a server somewhere, that server is probably going to run Linux. I tend to live and breathe on the command line, and for me the command line on Linux is second-to-none. OK so enough history, let’s talk about the good and the bad about Linux in 2020, from a web developer’s perspective. (At least, the ones I care about I’m sure you can find a counter-example!) The biggest gripe I have nowadays is with fonts, which is a far cry from fiddling with WiFi drivers. And since it seems everything is either an Electron app or a website these days, it’s rare to find a consumer app that doesn’t support Linux. On my Dell XPS 13 (which comes with Ubuntu preinstalled), WiFi and multi-monitor work out-of-the-box. I’m happy to say that none of my old Linux headaches exist anymore in 2020. There are many good bibliophiles who abide in the trenches and never proclaim their loyalty by a book-plate. The outward and visible mark of the citizenship of the book-lover is his book-plate. “It represents a very fine gentleman of about 1610, walking in broad sunlight in a garden, reading a little book of verses,” Gosse wrote in Gossip in a Library. Abbey created this bookplate for Edmund Gosse, a British poet, author, and critic. The American muralist and illustrator E.A. In fact, the various interpretations of this mystical tree are as all-embracing as literature itself.” 12. It is therefore a felicitous choice as an emblem of knowledge, eternal, yet needing daily nourishment, and ALWAYS GROWING. What could that possibly have to do with a bookplate? Well, explains White, “The tree, whether under this particular shape of Igdrasil in Scandinavian mythology, or under that of the Tree of Knowledge in the Mosaic tradition, has always been a favourite symbol for Literature. The rainbow shooting through the centre composition signifies the atmosphere the two figures under one cloak in the lower part of the design represent night and day, i.e., the planets. Sadly, the young commander never got to use the wonderful book plate. But his eldest son, James, a young naval officer of high promise, was appointed in the autumn of 1793 to the command of the “Spitfire” sloop of war. No “Captain Cook,” however, was living at the time of the grant, and consequently the plate could never have been used by the Cook of navigation fame. … The crest motto is “Circa orbem” and the motto below the shield on the original is “Nil intentatem reliquit.” .
